Referrals

Do I need a referral to see Dr Cao?

Yes, a valid referral from your GP or specialist is required. Referrals from GPs are valid for 12 months; referrals from other specialists are valid for 3 months.

How do I send my referral?

You can fax it to 02 8088 7986, email it to surgery@drcao.com.au, or send it electronically via Healthlink to specserv.

How urgent are urgent referrals seen?

Urgent referrals are prioritised and are usually seen within 1–2 weeks, or sooner if clinically indicated.

Consultations

What should I bring to my first appointment?

Your referral letter, Medicare card and private health insurance card (if applicable), any imaging and reports, blood test results, biopsy or pathology reports, a list of current medications, and any questions you have.

Can I bring a support person?

Absolutely. You are welcome to bring a family member or friend to your consultation. A second set of ears can be very helpful when discussing treatment options.

Does Dr Cao speak Mandarin?

Yes, Dr Cao offers consultations in both English and Mandarin.

Surgery

How long is the wait for surgery?

Wait times vary depending on the urgency of your condition. Urgent cases are prioritised. Our team will advise you of expected wait times at your consultation.

Will I need to stay in hospital?

Most patients stay 1–2 nights, depending on the procedure. Your expected length of stay will be discussed at your consultation.

Will I have a scar?

Incisions are placed in natural skin creases where possible and typically heal to fine, discreet lines within 6–12 months.

Fees & Insurance

What are the consultation fees?

Consultation fees are in line with the Australian Medical Association (AMA) recommended fee schedule, and Medicare rebates apply for eligible services.

Do I need private health insurance?

No — self-funded patients are welcome. We will provide a clear quote for all costs before proceeding with surgery.

What payment methods do you accept?

We accept EFTPOS, credit card, and bank transfer.

Recovery

When can I return to work?

Most patients return to desk work within 1–2 weeks; heavier physical work may require longer depending on the procedure.

What should I watch for after surgery?

Monitor for signs of infection, including increasing pain, redness, swelling, or fever, and contact our rooms if you have any concerns.

When is my follow-up appointment?

A post-operative review is usually scheduled 1–2 weeks after surgery, where results are discussed and ongoing follow-up is arranged.
