How to Get a Referral
A valid GP or specialist referral is required to see Dr Cao. Referrals from GPs are valid for 12 months; referrals from other specialists are valid for 3 months. You can ask your GP to fax or email the referral to us, or bring it to your first appointment.

What to Bring to Your First Appointment
- Your GP or specialist referral letter
- Medicare card and private health insurance card (if applicable)
- All relevant imaging (ultrasound, CT, MRI scans) and reports
- Blood test results
- Biopsy or pathology reports
- List of current medications
- List of questions you may have
Consultation Process
During your consultation, Dr Cao will:
- Review your medical history and referral
- Discuss your symptoms and concerns
- Examine you (this may include a neck examination or other relevant examination)
- Review your imaging and test results
- Explain your diagnosis and treatment options
- Discuss the risks, benefits, and expected outcomes of any recommended surgery
- Answer any questions you have
A chaperone is available for any examination if you wish. You are welcome to bring a family member or friend to your appointment.
Fee Information
Dr Cao's consultation fees are in line with the Australian Medical Association (AMA) recommended fee schedule. We will provide a detailed quote before any surgery.
- Consultations: Medicare rebates apply for eligible services
- Surgery: A detailed estimate will be provided including surgeon, anaesthetist, and hospital fees
- Private health insurance: We will provide item numbers for you to check with your insurer regarding your level of cover
- Payment: We accept EFTPOS, credit card, and bank transfer
Surgery Timeline
1. Referral & Consultation
Your GP sends a referral. You attend your consultation where Dr Cao assesses your condition and recommends treatment.
2. Pre-operative Planning
Any additional tests or imaging are arranged. You receive a detailed quote and surgery booking details.
3. Surgery
Your procedure is performed at one of Dr Cao's accredited hospitals. Most patients stay 1-2 nights.
4. Follow-up & Recovery
A post-operative review is scheduled 1-2 weeks after surgery. Results are discussed and ongoing follow-up is arranged.
After-Care Instructions
After your surgery, you will receive specific after-care instructions. General guidance includes:
- Keep the wound clean and dry for 48 hours
- Follow wound care instructions provided by the nursing staff
- Take pain relief as prescribed
- Avoid strenuous activity as advised
- Monitor for signs of infection (increasing pain, redness, swelling, fever)
- Attend your follow-up appointment as scheduled

Do I need a referral?

Wait times vary depending on the urgency of your condition. Urgent cases are prioritised. Our team will advise you of expected wait times at your consultation.
Can I see Dr Cao without private health insurance?
Yes, self-funded patients are welcome. We will provide a clear quote for all costs before proceeding with surgery.
Can I bring a support person?
Absolutely. You are welcome to bring a family member or friend to your consultation. A second set of ears can be very helpful when discussing treatment options.
